Mental Wellbeing

Andy Marshall

Mental Wellbeing Course Duration: 3 hours

In working to safeguard mental wellbeing in 2023, we need to begin from the changes that the pandemic has brought to our work and home lives: increased stress and anxiety for many, caused by the health, social and economic impacts; the growing awareness for many of the need to look after their own wellbeing and increased opportunity to do so; the changes that home and hybrid working have brought to work communication and relationships.

This mental wellbeing course is delivered by our Associate Andy who has dedicated his life to assisting others in learning and in improving their lives. He has done so across a diverse range of people from prisoners serving ‘life’ sentences to CEOs of major companies. Therefore, his ability to build rapport, communicate complex ideas and guide changes in behaviour is the foundation of his work as a facilitator.

Andy is also a designer of drama-based and active learning courses, specialising in Equality, Diversity and Inclusion projects, Mental Health Awareness, Resilience and Mental Well-being at Work

This 3-hour mental wellbeing course session has 2 primary aims:

To build a toolkit of approaches to look after your own mental wellbeing
To develop practical skills in supporting the mental wellbeing of colleagues
Mental Wellbeing Pre-course work

You will be asked to prepare for the course by watching a 20-minute video, “What do we mean by Mental Health?”, an introduction to the dual scale of mental wellbeing and mental illness, the symptoms of common mental health conditions, diagnosis and treatments.

Mental Wellbeing Course Content:

A review of the personal and work-related problems arising from COVID and home working
The body’s fight / flight / freeze responses to stress and the long-term effects on the body and mental health
3 principals for safeguarding our own wellbeing
3 essential skills in supporting others:

Skill 1 – Spotting the Signs

A live, online role play session with Jim (introduced in the pre-course video), in which participants spot the signs that he is not coping, during a video call

Skill 2 – Opening up the Conversation

A roleplay exercise, in which we re-visit Jim, exploring how to raise the issue of his wellbeing and support him

Skill 3 – Signposting Support

A review of the support available within participant’s organisations and beyond

Mental Wellbeing Post-course Support

The session will be followed up with a full support webpage, including electronic handbook, video tutorials and links to further reading.
